Fires without light IV

Now we will speak of the effect of lights.
Some are of stars, such as the sun and the moon
and the morning-star, others of lamps and fire.
There is a great difference between them,
for the light of stars makes shadows exactly
the same size as bodies, while the shadows
from fire are larger than the bodies.
Leon Battista Alberti

Fires without light II

Philosophers claim that there is a certain air which is much more subtle
than ours above the clouds and that, unlike ours, it is not composed
of terrestrial vapours but is a distinct element in its own right. They
say that, above the air, there is yet another body which is much more
subtle still, which they call the element of fire.
Rene Descartes

Fires without light

I know only two kinds of bodies in the world in which light occurs,
namely, the stars, and a flame or fire.

Passage After The Fall

As man is the best known of all things to man,
perhaps Protagoras,
in saying that man is the scale and the measure of all things,
meant that accidents in all things are duly compared to
and known by the accidents in man.

A concave surface is the one which lies inside,
as it were, underneath the last outer layer of a sphere,
as for example the inner surfaces of eggshells.
