The 4th Decade

Jeffrey Harris

With the prior four decades of drawing, Jeffrey Harris, has explored several psychological states. Prior images have included angels flying as in visitation to the garden similar to Late Gothic images of the same genre. All the images appear to be about Jeffrey's psychological interpretation of immediate events. During the eighties Jeffrey was influenced by American artists exploring a reinterpretation of the psychological images of Edvard Munch through to Emil Nolde and James Ensor. Like the English artist Francis Bacon, American artists such as Willem de Kooning would have been influenced by society magazines distributed through the post containing images of art. Jeffrey Harris used society media such as the newspaper and fashion magazines. With a later move to Melbourne, Australia, in the mid eighties, Jeffrey Harris, had further access. In the late eighties, Jeffrey Harris, showed alongside artists like the American artist Philip Guston. This society of influence influenced later drawings. Philip Guston is especially of interest when referring to the cartoon style genre of Jeffrey Harris's late drawings and of note are American artists of a similar generation like, Joyce Pensato, influenced by similar American artists. Like Guston and the Spanish artist Goya, Jeffrey Harris, explores a powerful and potent state of psychological awareness in all his graphic work. The four decades as a retrospective of drawings will be on show in Gore, New Zealand, later in February.
